Born St. Andrews, Scotland. Educated University of Glasgow. Came to Canada 1887 and joined CPR engineering staff, then turned to lead and silver mining in BC. After his term as lieutenant governor, was minister to Japan 1936-38. Died Montreal. Married (1) 1915 Lady Elizabeth Northcote, daughter of 2nd Earl of Iddesleigh; (2) 1932 Edith Molson, Montreal.
