The introduction of the "Elk Rotary" lawn mower into this movie about media manipulation and the nature of reality may not be an intentional reference to fraternities and service clubs. [01:04:30] Both the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the USA (founded in 1868 to inculcate the principles of Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love, Fidelity, and the spirit of American patriotism) and Rotary International (founded in 1905 as the world’s first service club) are integral parts of the small-town middle-america idealized in Truman Burbank’s Seahaven.
