Inside: "Chinatown Mafia" (2009)
This documentary about criminal gangs operating out of San Francisco's Chinatown area highlight the ongoing confusion about the many tongs such as the Hong Men, also called the Chinese Freemasons.
Narrator: "There are many tongs in San Francisco. The oldest plays host to a long established native organization called the Hung Moon or Chinese Freemasons. Hung Moon refers to a network of secret societies also known as triads which have existed in Mainland China for over three hundred years."
Kingman Wong, Special Agent, FBI San Francisco: "Hung Moon is the overall umbrella for triads. All triad rituals originated from the Hung Moon."
Narrator: "San Francisco's branch of the Hung Moon operate as a legitimate community organization. But some tong members with triad connexions managed to smuggle opium into the U.S...." [00:05:45]
While Canadian branches of the Chinese Freemasons are known as lawful fraternal associations, the presence since 2006 of convicted armed robber, gun trafficker, and racketeer Raymond "Shrimp Boy" Chow, as head of the San Francisco-based Hung Moon Ghee Kong Tong raise serious questions about the society.
There is no historical or philosophical connexion between the Chinese Freemasons and Freemasonry.
