Endeavour (2014)
In the original Inspector Morse television series (1987-2000) the titular character displayed a thinly veiled disdain for Freemasonry but neither Freemasonry nor individual Freemasons are ever implicated in any crimes. Echoing the anti-masonic theme of the previous episode of this prequel, "Trove", a completely irrelevant spin is given in the penultimate scene of this episode by having an unidentified, gloved figure take a ring from the police evidence desk and open a hidden compartment to display a masonic square and compasses. Although the ring had been used earlier to visually link a nineteenth century adulterous tea merchant with the contemporary murderer, the introduction of the masonic emblem is gratuitous and the black-gloved figure tampering with the evidence even more so.
