Prime Suspect 3 (1993)
At Assistant Deputy Superintendent John Kennington’s retirement party Chief Supt. Kernan, played by John Benfield, jokes to Supt. Thorndike, played by Stephen Boxer.
Kernan: "Someone should ask him to star in the cabaret. Like he does at the Bowery Roof Club." [00:19:22]
Thorndyke: Bowery what?
Kernan: See that bloke there with the iron gray hair, the emphasis on iron. Judge Syres. See if he can get you a membership." Kearnan taps the side of his nose.
Thorndyke, not realizing that the Bowery Roof Club is a very expensive gay bar, but assuming it is another opportunity for social climbing, jumps up to speak to the judge.
Thorndike: Excuse me, Judge Syres, isn't it? We met at a lodge dinner a few weeks ago."
A later scene has Judge Syers played by Lewis Jones, and Thorndike entering the club, Thorndyke leaving hurredly in disgust, and Syres passing in conversation with Vera Reynolds, played by Peter Capaldi, a central character implicated in a murder and pornography ring investigation. Nothing further is made of this link, but an implication by association is made between Kennington, played by Terence Harvey, (later revealed to have interfered with child abuse investigations), Judge Sykes and, by extension, Freemasonry.
